…the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:2 is by far in my opinion the most dramatic and heroic picture of God one can envision. Imagine a dead planet floating in the darkness of space. A shapeless body without purpose or direction. Suddenly, the Spirit of God moves over the face of the waters. Setting into motion a chain of events that ultimately leads to life as we know it.
If water was not present on the earth in the beginning, God could NOT have moved upon it. In my mind the description of earth being without form can only mean that the earth was a ball of water floating through space, existing in a state of perpetual motion. A dormant body part. One of infinite tools waiting for Gods Spirit to make use of it.
Imagine a source of energy hovering over and continually touching the waters with lightning bolts and communicating to others bodies of water similar to our brain communicate to other parts of our body with electrical signals through our nervous system. Gods Spirit moved upon the face of the waters just as our spirit moves upon the face of our body. Not confined yet connected.
